Pam changed out all of the existing vinyl windows to dual-glazed, metal-frame Milgard units and put in stacking Simpson-brand French doors leading to the covered porch. She even rebuilt a defunct corner fireplace in a more central location. Looking at the before floor plan (see below), it’s hard to imagine this room chopped up into discrete spaces.
The 21' x 18' living/dining area has an edited number of furnishings: a black sectional backed by bookcases, a vintage dining set, a melamine storage chest, a lounge chair and ottoman, and some side tables; not a coffee table or floor lamp in sight. Instead, the room is lit by three banks of windows and the overhead clerestories, and at night by fluorescents that wash the orange wall with light.
“Typically that’s all I have turned on in the room in the evening,” Pam says about the wall washers. “I do have a small floor lamp next to my cream-colored leather chair that I use sometimes for reading.”
One of the challenges of a to-the-studs room remodel or new construction is anticipating where electrical plugs and light fixtures need to go in an environment you’ve yet to live in. “I wired for two additional lighting locations: a floor plug that is still coiled up under the house that I waited to install until I figured out how I was most likely going to arrange the sofa pieces; and a cable light system from the upper fireplace wall to the wall above the entry ceiling, passing over the dining room table. I’ll put the cable system in at some point.”
Just inside the front door, a curved, freestanding wall partially wraps the kitchen and points visitors toward the living room while it screens the view of the cooking area from the dining room. Because it’s curved and doesn’t reach to the ceiling, the dining area visually extends into the entry, keeping both from feeling cramped.
